My grandfather, Alberto Cuadrado, was one of the many Spaniards that migrated from

their homeland given the traumatic ramifications of living through the Spanish Civil War at a young age.

He arrived in the Dominican Republic in his late 20’s and established his life here. He was an artist,

advertiser, and photographer who always encouraged me to be creative and learn about the arts & culture.

American[o] is a body of work honoring him and his legacy. I created a story about

cultural impact, immigrants, and artists. Leaving my homeland in 2014 to pursue my education,

I experienced a cultural shock that shaped me and my perspective of the world. This duality

translates into an archive of prints, photographs, and ready-mades (both from myself and my

grandfather). These narrate my experience living in a country that was not my own,

pursuing an ambitious education path and better quality of life.
